City acts quickly to restore dual viewers after vandals strike

Someone painted over eyepieces, making them unusable

The dual viewers gifted to the city earlier this year are usable again after vandals targetted them over the weekend.

On Nov. 5, a post on Facebook showed photos of the viewers with what looked to be red paint over the eyepieces, making them unusable.

“City crews removed the paint this morning,” said Brian Doddridge, officer, communications and business development for the City of Terrace Nov. 6.

Vandals struck 18 days after the Northern Savings Credit Union officially gifted the dual viewers to the city Oct. 19. The public can use them to see closeup views of the city from their position on Kalum Hill.

The viewers were a gift to the city to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday this year. One is for people to stand and look through and the other is for children or people in wheelchairs.

The credit union paid for them and their installation and the city covers their maintenance.

Grace Makowski, branch manager of the local credit union, had gone to council earlier this year to ask councillors to suggest a location for the viewers.

A call to Terrace RCMP revealed that no one had called police about the vandalism.
