City of Nanaimo workers had to spend hours cleaning up a mess someone left on the street.

According to a city press release, crews had to pick up 3,400 kilograms of household garbage that had been dumped in the 3700 block of Shenton Road.

The mess was found by a passerby at about 6:30 a.m. Sunday.

“It took a city crew equipped with trucks and a front-end loader hours to clean up a load of over three tonnes of household garbage that had been dumped on Shenton Road over the weekend,” noted Dave LaBerge, city manager of community safety, in a press release. “It appeared that the debris had been compacted, as if it had been transported in a commercial garbage truck. This incident not only polluted the neighbourhood, but also posed a risk to blocking storm water drainage and sewer systems.”

The city asks anyone with information to contact bylaw services at 250-755-4422 or Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345. To make an anonymous tip, contact Crime Stoppers at www.nanaimocrimestoppers.com or at 1-800-222-8477.
