The City of Nanaimo hopes streetlight replacement around the city turns out to be a bright idea.

The municipality advised in a press release that it will begin a program next week to start swapping out streetlight heads with LED fixtures. Bowen Road, Aulds Road and Terminal Avenue will be the pilot locations for the LED street lighting. The press release notes that the locations for new lighting were identified “with a particular focus on safety improvement at high-crash locations.” Work on replacing 400 lights will begin Monday, Dec. 10.

“The new LED street light fixtures being installed will improve public safety, require less energy and maintenance, and significantly reduce operating costs,” said Scott Pamminger, city manager of infrastructure planning and energy, in the press release.

The city calculates that converting to LED lights will reduce energy use by up to 60 per cent.

According to the city, it costs $300,000 each year to power more than 4,000 street lights.
