The City of Castlegar will be receiving $2.18 million dollars from the federal/provincial Safe Restart program.
“The funding is earmarked for addressing revenue shortfalls, facility reopening and operating costs, emergency planning and response,” said Castlegar CAO Chris Barlow at the Nov. 16 city council meeting.
“It’s basically for costs related to COVID-19 response.”
The money can be spent over several years but must be used for COVID-19 expenses or losses.
City council will have to decide how they will spend the money during their upcoming annual budgeting process.
Barlow said one of the primary things the city will consider using the money for is to supplement the revenue losses at the West Kootenay Regional Airport.
Cities are also allowed to use the money for bylaw enforcement and protective services like fire and police, computer and technology costs and services for vulnerable persons.
