The message, timed just after 9 a.m. Sunday morning stated that “over 30 cm of snow fell overnight. Another 10 cm is forecast for today. Many roads have deep snow and drifts. The public is advised to avoid driving and only go out if absolutely necessary. There are many abandoned cars around the area causing problems for traffic. Crews are working 24 hrs and are concentrating on priority routes only at this time. Property owners are reminded to please clear sidewalks in front of their property.”

The City does maintain a priority map online, listing which roads will be cleaned first.

The Chilliwack Minor Hockey Association also advised players’ families to consider road conditions when deciding to travel to games and practices. They also sent out a message on Sunday morning, via emails to players.

“As we have been hit with the first snowfall of the season, some games my be postponed due to driving conditions. This could affect Chilliwack teams playing away games or teams attending games in Chilliwack. While hockey is a winter sport, safety is paramount and each game will be decided on a case-by-case basis should it need to be deferred.”

Highway travel was also not advised on Saturday night between Chilliwack and Abbotsford. Numerous cars have been abandoned on the highway since the winter weather began, and ICBC has already reported a sharp increase in claims over the weekend.
