New banners are on display throughout the Harbour City.

The City of Nanaimo announced that the winning submission in the 2019-2020 street banner design competition has been installed on lamp posts throughout the community.

The winning artist was local resident Amy Pye of Pye Designs. She was one of 18 artists to submit entries to the contest, which accepted submissions from professionals and amateurs late last year.

Pye’s design was selected because it reflects Nanaimo, according to a city press release. The design depicts activity on Nanaimo’s water.

“I think one of our strongest assets, as a community, is our ability to cohabit with the world around us. Being a harbour city, the ocean and nature are a huge part of what defines us. I really wanted to show people having fun and enjoying themselves while being in nature, but not disrupting it,” Pye said in the release.

The city’s street banner design program has been around for nearly 30 years.

“Street banners grace many streetlight poles during the spring and summer seasons creating a fun and festive atmosphere. The city’s street banner program aids in the promotion of Nanaimo and its offerings, and adds colour and excitement to Nanaimo,” Chris Barfoot, the city’s culture and heritage coordinator said in the release.
