In a job posting that’s nearly 350 words long, everything from the job itself to the lifestyle is discussed.
“Working for the City of Penticton means we raise families where others come for their vacation,” the posting on CivicInfoBC reads. “Our home offers the best beaches, cycling trails, parks, recreation facilities and mountain escapes, not to mention all the shopping and amenities a vibrant community needs.”
The posting lists important factors of the job, like city council’s “sole employee of council policy,” which makes the CAO the only link between city staff and council.
“You can be confident that your influence, focused direction, advocacy and decisive vision will shape the growth of this thriving city,” reads the posting, which also describes an “evolving” community undergoing “rapid change”, where a CAO has “the opportunity to leave a lasting mark.”
The current CAO, Peter Weeber, announced his departure from the City of Penticton earlier this month, will be part of the hiring process.

“I know every CAO in B.C. The vetting will be very interesting,” said Weeber. “The quality of the CAO is going to be pretty high because we’re not going to allow anybody without a really good track record of working with communities, working with our partners.
“That’s the beauty of bringing in strong leadership. They’ll all bring their own their own style to this job.”
The ideal candidate is described as having experience leading both strategic and operational aspects of a public sector environment, but also having an “entrepreneurial spirit” and potentially a private sector business background, along with “excellent communication and human resource skills.”
The job posting states it will remain open until a successful candidate is found. Weeber said he has committed staying in the position until the end of March.
