The City of Penticton is prepared and waiting for the forecasted snow that will hit the area this evening.
Environment Canada reported on Jan. 22 that a low pressure system will track along the South Coast tonight, bringing with it snow over the southwest Interior, southwestern sections of Chilcotin and the Boundary region.
“Snow accumulations of 10 to 15 cm near the valley bottom and up to 20 cm for the highway passes can be expected by Wednesday morning before the snow tapers off to a few flurries,” states Environment Canada’s release.
In advance of the expected snowfall, the City of Penticton is reminding the community of proper snow removal procedures.
“The City’s Good Neighbour Bylaw requires property owners or property occupants to clear all sidewalks adjoining their properties of snow and ice before 11am following a weather event,” states a release from the city.
The release also stipulates that snow removal services are “based on priority routes with first and secondary priority areas including main roads, steep hills, emergency routes, bus routes, school zones, collector and industrial roads and third priority areas including residential streets, industrial side-streets and lanes.”
“Safety remains a concern for crews clearing snow and ice from roads and sidewalks. Large work vehicles can sometimes make unexpected turns or stops,” reads the release. “Please approach or pass these vehicles with care and consideration.”
In addition, the city is reminding motorists to remove cars from the street during a snow event to allow plows to work more efficiently and give crews the ability to plow the entire roadway, reducing potential vehicle damage and providing faster clean-up.
“We would like to thank residents in advance for their patience as road crews begin the process of clearing our streets and sidewalks of snow and ice”, said public works manager Len Robson. “If residents have concerns over the next few days or need to report an issue, please call the public works at 250-490-2500 or email us at publicworks@penticton.ca.”
