The City of Quesnel is holding a public hearing tonight (Tuesday, Nov. 20) to allow residents the chance to have their say in front of City Council on a proposed zoning amendment which would allow a government cannabis store to be located either in the West Quesnel business district or the city’s central business district.
The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall.
Oral and written submissions will be accepted at the meeting, with the Nov. 20 meeting marking the last time locals will have a say in the matter.
The public hearing is part of the city’s regular process when amending a bylaw.
At a Sept. 18 council meeting, Council directed City staff that they would allow the recreational sale of cannabis in the city with a government store, rather than private retailers. A publicly owned store would be regulated by the B.C. Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch.
In discussion at the September meeting, Mayor Simpson pointed out that the method for auditing private retailers is not clear.
“It’s difficult for us to find out who these [private retailers] are. … It appears as though the audit process for them to maintain their licence will be a phone call, ‘We’re coming in to take a look.’,” he said at the time.
