Some 60 people attended a recent open house for a look at what’s in the works for downtown Grand Forks.

The City hosted the open house on February 20 so residents could learn more about plans for Phase Two of the Downtown Beautification Plan.

“We would like to thank everyone who took the time to attend. We were very pleased with the turnout. We asked to hear from the public on the second phase of the proposed plans for the downtown core and received some great feedback,” says Mayor Brian Taylor.

Residents say new signage directing visitors from the highway to the downtown will help attract more people downtown, and improved lighting and more plants and trees will help create a more vibrant and inviting area for both residents and visitors.

Phase One was completed last spring along Market Avenue. The project included hanging baskets and planters, upgraded lighting, new garbage and recycle bins, new bench seating and painted crosswalks.

The open house was a presentation of proposed ideas and Council will decide on the final plans. Once approved, work is expected to start in the spring on 72nd Avenue and 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Streets with new benches, improved lighting, bike racks, hanging baskets, painted crosswalks, landscaping and planters.

“Residents told us that they love their downtown and were impressed with what’s been done so far as part of the Downtown Beautification Project. We want to build on that and continue to make the downtown a focus for investment opportunity and tourism attraction,” adds Taylor.

Additional information on the Downtown Beautification Project, including the open house display panels and feedback form, is posted on our website at www.grandforks.ca .
