A zoning amendment proposed to allow retail cannabis sales in downtown Quesnel, West Quesnel, along Highway 97 in commercial zones, and in property zoned for shopping centres is set for a public hearing on Feb. 5, 2019.

The hearing will allow members of the public to provide feedback to Quesnel City Council on the zoning amendment, which restricts the sale of retail cannabis from being located within 100 metres of a playground, playfield or school, and within 50 metres of a residential-zoned property.

The amendment would also allow cannabis production in Quesnel’s light industrial zone, which is located near the airport.

The first reading of the amendment was passed by City Council on Jan. 8, 2019.

In November, the City of Quesnel received its first application for a private cannabis store, at 308 McLean Street.

In a staff report to council, director of development services Tanya Turner said city staff has also now received a notice from the province of its intention to establish a government-run cannabis store in West Park Mall. Both applications are currently under review.

Turner indicated that a number of prospective operators have also been in touch with the City regarding establishing private retail cannabis stores. “Staff anticipate receipt of at least two more facilities’ applications,” she wrote in her report.
