A pair of Nanaimo schools are back to business as usual after being on alert due to a bear sighting earlier this morning, May 28.
According to a social media post, a shelter in place was issued for the district administration centre and Nanaimo District Secondary and Fairview Elementary schools at around 10 a.m. It was lifted at 11 a.m.
B.C. Conservation Service was called in and investigated, the district said, and no bear was found.
In social media post, the City of Nanaimo said a bear has been spotted in the Buttertubs Marsh area and parks crew are putting signage up in the park. Exercise caution in the area, the city said.
According to district policy, a shelter in place is issued if there is an environmental hazard that may impact the school. In that situation everyone is brought into the school and remains indoors, while windows and doors are secured.
Activity continues as normal inside the school typically, according to district policy.
