In celebration of National Canadian Film Day the Clearwater Library is holding free movie screenings, which will take place this weekend with a few other activities for residents to take part in as well.

The screenings will be offered April 20 beginning at 11 a.m. with the film You Are Here: A Come From Away Story.

“It’s a 2018 film that takes place shortly after the 9-11 attacks; there were 6,000 people who were unexpectedly having to land in Newfoundland and they had nowhere to stay,” said Kaylea Prime, branch head at the Clearwater Library.

“They were in a small town and the story is about the community coming together and helping those 6,000 people who were stranded. It’s a feelgood documentary about a small community helping people in need.”

The second film is called Snow Time, which Prime described as more family-friendly and is a remake of a 1984 animated French Canadian classic about an epic snowball fight. Snow Time will be shown at 1 p.m.

National Canadian Film Day is presented by Reel Canada as a way to celebrate the achievements of Canadian filmmakers and this year it’s a special event, added Prime, because it’s celebrating 100 years of Canadian cinema.

“They picked their top 100 films that are surrounding a certain theme to do with the oldest Canadian film, which is Back to God’s Country, a sassy, snowy adventure is how they described it, so they picked Canadian films that fit that theme,” she said.

“Then people from across the country in different organizations and communities can choose a film and they actually send the film out to you and you can screen it sometime around April 17, which is the official day to celebrate National Canadian Film Day, so we chose the Saturday hoping we’ll get more people out.”

The films being screened in Clearwater were chosen by library staff based on what would likely appeal to the broadest range of residents, with a mix of the family-friendly animation and a critically acclaimed documentary on the helping nature of a small community that pulls together to help others.

To add to the activities of the day there will be a photo booth set up for attendees to have fun with and popcorn and refreshments will be provided to the cinephiles that stop by.

“We’re hoping that down the road we might be able to do some more movie screenings as well, so this is the first test run to see what people might be interested in.”
