Clearwater RCMP responded to 42 calls for service over this past week. A few of them are outlined below:
Sept. 19
At 2:40 p.m., Clearwater RCMP received a report of a pedestrian having been struck at the round-about on Highway 5 in Clearwater.
Cst. Schnyder, Cst. Hall and Sgt. Simpson all responded to the report. Upon arrival, BC Ambulance Service was already on scene and a passerby had stopped to help, directing traffic (certified flagger) safely through the round-about.
The collision had occurred at the cross-walk on Park Drive at the exit of the round-about. A white minivan registered to, and driven by, an 80-year-old local woman had struck a 70-year-old Keremeos man who had been in the cross-walk at the time.
Sgt. Simpson obtained photographs of the scene, Cst. Hall obtained an audio recorded statement from a witness, and Cst. Schnyder identified the driver via a matching photo BC driver license.
It was found that the pedestrian had been crossing from the north side of the intersection (the Old Caboose Restaurant) toward the south side (Interior Savings) and was half-way across the second portion of cross-walk when he noticed the van approaching.
The pedestrian attempted to speed up to get out of the way, but was unable to get all the way across and was bumped by the vehicle hard enough to knock him to the ground.

The pedestrian did not suffer a serious injury, being released from the hospital later that evening with bruising, soreness, and some scrapes, along with a headache.
The driver said she had been looking for an opening to enter the small round-about, forcing her to look left, away from where she planned to go, and when she began her turn, from the south, turning east onto Park Drive, she did not see the pedestrian until it was too late.
The driver immediately stopped and got out of her vehicle to check on the pedestrian and waited for police. Her vehicle was stopped approximately one vehicle length beyond the cross-walk and there was no damage to her vehicle, nor any tire marks on the road. All evidence collected suggested this was a low-speed collision where the pedestrian did not appear to make any direct contact with the front of the vehicle, though contact was made, and he was caused to fall.
The driver was issued a Violation Ticket for Fail to Yield to Pedestrian.
Sept. 21
At 1:46 p.m., Clearwater RCMP received a report from a local man of firearms being discharged inside the district, contrary to a new bylaw.
The complainant said the shooting was coming from the 400 block of Gill Creek Road in Clearwater.
Cst. Schnyder responded, first checking the District of Clearwater bylaws page, as Cst. Schnyder was aware only of discussions to put such a bylaw in place. The page did not have any updated information regarding the bylaw having been passed recently.
Cst. Schnyder attended the area and spoke with a local property owner there who was at home with his wife. While speaking with him both could hear gunshots off in the distance. The property owner believed they were coming from up on Road 2 approximately 500 metres away as the crow flies away from his residence. Constable Schnyder did confirm that the shots were not coming from the gun range nearby. The investigation into this matter is ongoing.
