The Clements Centre in Duncan is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its Annual Sock Drive.
Sheila Coogan, a program coordinator at the centre, said that 10 years ago, the centre’s adult-day program team decided that they wanted to do something for others in the community.
“One of the staff suggested a sock drive, and before we knew it, an annual event was born,” she said.
“Each year, the team sets the goal to match the year, and every year we have managed to not only meet, but surpass our goal. To date, more than 20,500 pairs of socks have been distributed to men, women and children of the Cowichan Valley, through groups such as the Salvation Army, Warmland, Cowichan Lodge, Babies Best Chance at Margaret Moss, Sassy Lion, area schools and many others.”
Coogan said the centre has been fortunate to have the support of many local businesses throughout the years.
She said Mastercraft Flooring has been a collection point since the first year, and each year since then, the centre has had people drop off bags and boxes of socks that had been collected at workplaces.
Coogan said this year, of course, the goal is collect and distribute 2018 pairs of new socks.
“Our drive will start on Monday, Oct. 1, and run until Dec. 7,” she said.
“Socks can be dropped off at the Clements Centre and Mastercraft. If your business or workplace would like a collection box, please don’t hesitate to contact me at 250-746-4135, ext. 229, and one of our groups will be happy to drop it off for you. We also encourage businesses to challenge their fellow businesses; it benefits the whole community in the end.”
