Parksville and area residents are calling on people to “rise up for climate justice” on the eve of the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris next week.
The Parksville rally is one of more than 2,300 events scheduled on Sunday, November 29, the eve of the Paris summit. People will march all over Canada to send a message to the new government that climate action is a priority.
There are at least six other marches scheduled on the Island and more than 2,400 people are registered in Vancouver.
“Let’s make this the biggest climate action the world has ever seen, and send a powerful message of hope for our climate in these darkest of times,” pleads a news release.
The event starts at 1 p.m. with a rally at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre. Reported speakers include Qualicum First Nation Chief Michael Recalma, St. Edmunds Church Rev. Andrew Twiddy, Qualicum Beach planner Luke Sales, new Member of Parliament Gord Johns and Randy Holmquist of Canadian Electric Vehicles.
In a news release, Johns said he would “address the need for greater action to combat climate change while world leaders are gathering at the climate conference in Paris.”
The rally will be followed by the walk, starting at 2:30 p.m. The group will leave the PCCC west on Jensen Ave, to the Alberni Highway, down the hill to Highway 19A and onto the waterfront boardwalk for a brief ceremony.
The walk will be followed by a labyrinth walk and peace dance at the labyrinth at the old hovercraft pad at the end of the beach at 3 p.m., led by Holly Carnegie Letcher and Joanne Sales.
