Close call after porch catches fire in Keremeos

Fire department says it's lucky the neighbours spotted the small blaze and called it in

Keremeos fire department is investigating what would have caused the front porch of a house to catch fire on Sunday morning.

Luckily, neighbours of the home on 5th Street and 10th Avenue spotted the blaze. The fire started around 9:50 a.m.

“It was a very close call, but lucky neighbours called it in quickly,” said Keremeos fire chief Jordy Bosscha.

Firefighters were able to douse the small fire quickly. It appears to have started underneath the porch in the dirt. There are scorch marks up the porch. With these record-breaking temperatures, it could have spread quickly, said Bosscha.

But what caused the fire is still a mystery at this point, he said. The investigation continues.

Residents had a scare when a grass fire on Ashnola Road and Paul Creek Road spread quickly last Saturday. Fire crews and water support were quick to the scene and managed to get the fire out before it spread.
