Commonwealth Place temporarily shut down

Saanich Commonwealth Place closed Jan. 22-23 after power outage brought to light a mechanical failure in need of repair

Visitors to Saanich Commonwealth Place were out of luck on Jan. 22 and 23 when a power outage brought to light a mechanical failure, closing the facility for both days.

The recreation centre’s main power switch opened during the power outage and had to be closed manually. While the centre has been fully operational and open to the public since Tuesday morning, the switch is slated for replacement.

“The power went out at 10:30 on Sunday morning and when the rest of the power went on in the neighbourhood at 4:30, that’s when we realized we had an issue within our own building,” said Doug Henderson, director of Parks and Recreation for Saanich.
