If you are looking for a way to serve the community, the Lumby Fire Department may have an opportunity for you.
The department is seeking new members and anyone interested in receiving information can drop by the fire hall Tuesday at 7 p.m.
“They can check out the hoses and try the turn-out gear on,” said chief Tony Clayton.
“We will give them a ride in the trucks and they can talk to the crew.”
The department presently has 21 members who serve the Village of Lumby and part of Area D.
But turnover occurs and the organization is always looking for new recruits.
“It’s a chance to give to the community,” said Clayton of the largely voluntary position although members do receive a stipend for call-outs and practices.
“It’s also a good way to make new friends.”
Besides attending fires, the department takes part in a number of community events like the Halloween fireworks and Lumby Days.
Men and women wanting to join the department must be at least 19 years old and live within the fire department’s boundaries.
“There is a time commitment once you are involved,” said Clayton, adding that a fire can occur at any time.
On average, the crew responds to 60 to 90 calls a year, ranging from motor vehicle accidents to structure fires.
New recruits must take a 40-hour course and then there are weekly practices.
“If anyone has this in the back of their mind, Tuesday is the time to come out and find out more about the department,” said Clayton.
