Parksville Qualicum Beach residents are mourning the loss of a six-year-old boy who passed away just after Christmas day.

The boy’s father, Darren Coldwell, posted on Facebook: “Our beautiful boy was taken from us peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of boxing day morning. We do not know how or why but they are working to find out.”

The BC Coroners Service and RCMP were not able to confirm details by  press time.

Coldwell’s Facebook page is flooded with messages from friends and family offering their condolences.

Longtime friend, Megan Olsen, hosted a fundraising event for the family this past Sunday at the Upper Deck Sports Bar.

“I don’t know a lot of the details,” said Olsen. “But I do know how to throw together a fundraiser really fast.”

Olsen, who is an event planner with Arbutus Events, has additionally set up an online donation site where people can make contributions through PayPal.

“I just set it up this morning (Dec. 27) and we already have close to $1,300,” said Olsen. “I have set up this page for those that can give a little to reduce the stress of financial worries at this sad time and let the family heal.”
