The Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) of the Vavenby Elementary School is always coming up with different ideas to raise money to buy new outside play equipment for the school.
The fundraiser for October is Beware the Toilet. The students are decorating a spooky toilet that can be placed on various yards in the community.
Residents pay to have it moved.
Recommended donations are $10 to have it placed on a friend’s lawn, $5 to have it removed from your own, and $20 to insure that it doesn’t make its way back to you—there is a sign on the toilet with these amounts as well as the mover’s phone number.
If you want to make sure this spooky toilet ends up on a friend’s lawn phone Kerry Klingbeil at 604-868-1301. All drop-offs are confidential.
An ongoing fundraiser is accepting bottles and cans that are returnable to the stores. Just drop them off at the school.
The school is in need of more cross-country ski equipment for the children.
Strong Start, a program for children up to 5 years-old, has started again. It’s held on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to noon at the school.
On Sept. 18 the morning started off with free play; the children were checking out the toys then they painted. When done the older ones went to play in the sand box. Their healthy snack came next and then it was off to the gym to play.
A new program that has begun at the school is Play Group. It’s on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon and is also for preschoolers. The leader is Denica Kelly.
This last Thursday the children played with toys, painted, and did a couple of age appropriate puzzles. After cleaning up they had a healthy snack and then went to the gym to play. Both these programs teach the children to socialize and to share. They also give time for the parents to get out and visit.
Crib will be starting again on Oct. 4 at the community hall. Play begins at 7 p.m and the cost is $3 for the evening.
Everyone is welcome.
The Vavenby Trails and Recreation Society has donated two benches to the town. One is placed at the post office, the other is on the trail to the dump.
The Society and the fire department are organizing a community barbecue for Oct. 14, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Community Hall.
All the food will be supplied and the firemen will be doing the barbecuing. People pay by donation.
The fire trucks will be there for the children to look at. Come on out for a fun time.
The Fine Things Thrift Store is donating $550 to the school to go towards the purchase of two new stoves. New stoves are needed as the ones now in the kitchen are very old and are being used a lot.
