On Sept. 20 the Grade 1-4 Vavenby Elementary students went to Blue River to join the school children there and go on a river safari to see wild life. Unlike Vavenby’s clear sky it rained the whole time the group was on the boats and it was very cold. Everyone had been provided with a poncho.

The students saw birds, fish, and an eagle’s nest, but no bears or other four legged wild life. One of the boys really enjoyed it when the front of the boat he was in rose for a bit up off the water.

Everyone went to see a water fall. They walked up some brick stairs and the children noticed a pattern in the stumps beside them.

After the safari everybody went back to Blue River Elementary for lunch. Chicken salad and chicken soup were provided. Then they made lanterns for the Golden Skull Race at the Canoe Regatta. The lanterns were made out of plastic cups with little candles in them and wrapped in paper the students decorated.

Another activity was a race where the children were divided into teams made up of students from both schools. Each team stood in a line. The first child had to pass his cup of water over his head to pour into the person’s cup behind him, and so on, down the line.

The last team member had to pour the water into a bucket. The first team to fill up their bucket was the winner. Everyone had a good time even though it was a cold and wet day.

The Tuesday before the field trip an RCMP officer came to speak to the students about the proper use of calling 911. The children explained that 911 was for emergencies only. One child said that if they were just playing around by phoning it then the police might not get to a real emergency on time.

The toilet for the Beware the Toilet fundraiser has been completely decorated now. Phone Kerry Klingbeil about having it moved to your lawn or a friend’s lawn. Phone Klingbeil at 250-674-1637.

On Sept. 24 it was one lane traffic at the Vavenby Bridge Road railroad crossing. Argo was there to level the crossing out. Asphalt with a temperature of 140 F was brought from Kamloops and was being dumped between the rails on one side of the crossing.

No traffic was allowed to cross on that side until the asphalt had cooled and hardened, which takes about one and a half hours. Then the other side was done. Flag people were needed to keep the traffic flowing.

A bear has been seen around town. Protect your children and small animals by keeping a look-out for it.

There were two trains passing each other at the Vavenby Bridge Road railroad crossing on Sept. 30. Neither had to stop for the other because of the extension in the railway line that went towards Birch Island.

This had been worked on in the summer and completed in last month. This “double train,” with both moving at the same time, was a first.
