Doris Scarff held her Christmas Open House from Nov. 22 – Nov. 24. Scarff’s home was decorated for the season inside and out. There was a beautiful Christmas village on her kitchen windowsill.
Scarff had crafted all of the pieces using rocks. She was selling her jams, jellies, soup mixes, and art work.
Suzanne Ellis had jewellery, knitted gloves, and gift envelopes for sale that she had made. Watkins products were provided by Trevor Harder. Serenity also had items for sale such as CDs and jewellery.
Scarff makes her open house a very cozy affair. She offered cookies and other snacks to eat and mint tea to drink. There was music playing in the background.
The Dunn Lake hatchery dropped off between 60 – 65 salmon eggs to the Vavenby Elementary School for the students to raise. The children explained that the tank is covered in black paper because the eggs cannot have light. Grade 4 student Moira Chrystall explained, “In the river the mom makes a pit with her tail and puts the eggs in it. The male comes along and fertilizes them. Then the mom comes back and covers the eggs with gravel.”
For now the students said that they have to check the thermometer. It must be between eight and nine degrees. They can’t look at the eggs until Valentine’s Day.
There will be a school Christmas concert for the community on Dec. 19 at 6:00 p.m. A turkey dinner will follow.
This year’s community Christmas potluck supper at the hall is on Dec. 8. The doors will open at 5 p.m. and dinner will start at 6 p.m. Beverages will be supplied. Santa plans on taking a break from his workshop and coming to the party around 7:30 p.m. Come and get your picture taken with him. For more information phone organizer Barb Pennell at 250–676–9485.
Christmas in the Village at the Vavenby Christian Church is on Dec. 16 at 11:00 a.m. There will be lots of Christmas music with a turkey dinner after.
Save your Christmas trees this year. There will be a tree burning on Jan. 13 put on by the Vavenby Trails and Recreation Society and the volunteer firefighters. Planning is still in the works.
The movie shown at the Vavenby Christian Church Nov. 23 was Soul Surfer, based on a true story that takes place in Hawaii.
The main character, a young girl, loves the water and is an expert surfer. She gets a sponsor to put her in the Regionals. While practicing a shark grabs her and takes off one of her arms at the elbow. It was a real tear jerker and worth watching.
