Vavenby volunteer fire chief Phillip Weber asked firefighter Doris Scarff to paint two murals on the inside walls of the fire hall.
Weber said he chose Scarff because she’s been a very important member of the fire department for the last five years and is a good artist. She felt honoured by the request.
The first painting was up to her to decide on. Scarff showed Weber a sample of what she had in mind. It’s of a fire truck with flames behind it and firefighters putting out the blaze. It took about 20 hours to complete.
Weber requested the theme Lest We Forget for the second mural. His reason was so we never forget the people who gave their lives for us to live peacefully in this country. This mural has a partial border of poppies and a soldier kneeling in front of a cross.
She finished painting both murals by the end of January except for a clear coat that she has to add for protection.
Scarff said she had a lot of fun doing them. She has an art studio at her home on 337 Ruby Road. The studio is open by appointment. Just call at 250-674-8857.
Spring Fling
The third annual Spring Fling at Vavenby Elementary is on March 6. It’s organized by the Parents Auxiliary Committee (PAC). The Spring Fling has a dinner and a silent auction. Tickets are $5 per person or $20 a family. They can be bought at the post office. Keep your tickets this year as there will be a door prize.
The PAC is asking members of the community and businesses for donations towards the silent auction. Just contact Christina Fillion at 250-674-8133 or at christinasharley@hotmail.com. She’ll gladly arrange pick up. The PAC would like all donations in by Feb. 29.
All money raised is going to the purchase of a new school playground. Fillion thanks the community “for your continued support of our small school and the students and I look forward to hearing from you.”
