More than $14,000 has been raised for victims of a fatal apartment fire in Sparwood Heights.
One man was killed and dozens left homeless when a fire tore through Block B of Ponderosa Manor on August 9.
The blaze prompted the evacuation of 96 units, 24 of which are a total loss, as well as an outpouring of support from the community.
As of Tuesday, $14,315 had been raised for residents of Block B, who have been placed in short-term lodging while an investigation into the fire continues. Gift cards valued at $60 have also been donated.
The District of Sparwood has announced it will continue to collect cash donations, including cheque, debit and visa gift cards, up until September 15.
Anyone wishing to donate furniture is asked to send their contact information to the District, which has limited storage space.
Donations will then be disbursed based upon greatest need.
Only those who lost their primary residence will be eligible, with applications to be weighted primarily upon whether the resident was uninsured or underinsured.
The District will also give special consideration to residents’ financial situation and vulnerability, such as health, age and children, when handing out the funds.
To apply for funding, email sparwood@sparwood.ca and include your name, contact information, insurance status, and financial need.
Block B residents are also asked to advise the District if they will not be applying for funding to ensure that funds are disbursed to those in greatest need.
Donations can be dropped off at the District Municipal Office at 136 Spruce Avenue or mailed to PO Box 520 Sparwood, BC V0B 2G0.
