Community walk kicks off a healthy 2017

Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 holidays feature free activities

Oak Bay Mayor Nils Jensen took the time to wish good health, happiness and friendships for residents in the final council meeting of 2016.

“May the joyous spirit of this wonderful season be with you and your loved ones,” Jensen said. “We all look forward to 2017, a year that promises to be a positive and exciting one for Oak Bay.”

Jensen also took the time to pitch the annual healthy community walk that starts each year in Oak Bay.

On Jan. 1, the community walk with mayor and council leaves the Oak Bay Recreation Centre lobby at 12:30 p.m. There is a meet and greet with local politicians from 1:30 to 2:30 in the Upstairs (Sportsview) Lounge with coffee and tea provided.

A number of other free sessions mark the start of 2017 at Oak Bay Recreation Centre. Jazzercise class runs in the Indoor Sports Field from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (use the Goldsmith entrance). There’s an Everyone Welcome Skate from noon to 1:30 p.m. and tennis features 15 minute private lessons from noon to 2:30 p.m.

The Oak Bay aquatics facilities, including both pools, hot tub, sauna and steam room, are closed due to a leak repair.  The exact reopening date is unknown.

The recreation centre is also open Christmas Day from 1 to 4 p.m. Skating, tennis and the fitness studio are all free with a non-perishable food item or donation for the food bank.

Skate from 1 to 3:30 or head for the fitness studio and tennis bubble from

1 to 3:45 p.m.
