A new advisory group will be created to determine compensation levels for the mayor and council members of the Town of Comox.
At the Nov. 18 strategic planning meeting (formerly committee of the whole) Shelly Russwurm, deputy corporate administrator presented a report and recommended that a local advisory group be authorized to undertake a review.
In comparison with similar municipalities (Courtenay, Qualicum Beach, Parksville and Sidney) Mayor Russ Arnott made $38,384 (compared to an average of $52,062) in 2019; Comox councillors were compensated $20,230 compared to an average of $26,197.
The mandate of the advisory group is to examine the fair and reasonable remuneration levels, an annual adjustment costing formula and the timing and frequency of any subsequent reviews.
The advisory group will consist of three members: one person who is a business owner within the Town of Comox, one person who has previously served on council for the town and one member at large who resides within the town.
The advisory group will provide a final report to the chief administrative officer with its recommendations.
