Comox residents ask council to regulate short term vacation rentals

More than half a dozen letters submitted to Comox council from a variety of residents are asking the Town to define and regulate short term vacation rentals.

More than half a dozen letters submitted to Comox council from a variety of residents are asking the Town to define and regulate short term vacation rentals.

Following the letters from residents, Coun. Ken Grant said at Wednesday’s committee of the whole meeting defining and regulating the rentals – such as Airbnb – is one of the Town’s strategic priorities.

Rather than create a staff report he said, council should leave it in the hands of Town staff to create a proper report, including feedback and best practices, which will then be received in the spring when council reviews its strategic priorities plan.

Currently, vacation rentals within the town are monitored on a complaint-basis, which some residents noted are not a fair way to regulate.

There are more than 500 properties listed on Airbnb in the Comox Valley.
