The owner of a proposed 156-bed dementia village is seeking feedback from the community through a virtual open house.

In May 2020, Island Health signed a project development agreement with Providence Living to build and operate the village which, once completed will replace the existing beds at The Views long-term care home, at the existing site at the former St. Joseph’s General Hospital in Comox.

According to Providence, the long-term home will replace The Views in about three years’ time.

They note the village design supports a philosophy of care that promotes freedom of movement, safe access to the outdoors and interactions with the community, including opportunities for intergenerational connections.

As part of the planning process, Providence is seeking feedback from the community prior to submitting the plans to the Town of Comox. The purpose of the consultation is to receive comments from the public in order to have them considered in the design of the project.

The property at 2137 Comox Ave. contains long-term care and hospice services. However, the hospice services will transfer to a new long-term care home currently being build in Courtenay and The View will replace these with respite beds.

It will also have an adult day program and tenant services including a thrift shop, child care, education, professional and community services.

The two-story building is proposed on a portion of undeveloped land bordering Comox Avenue.

In their Stage 1 public consultation where feedback was gathered in December 2020, they received 26 comments with 19 in support and one opposed.

Providence is encouraging the community to share their thoughts in the second stage of a two-stage pre-application consultation. To view the information and video on the project, visit https://bit.ly/2Z7oHiU.

Comments can be submitted by email or mail. All written responses, including submissions by email, must include the name and address of the person making the comment and include ‘2137 Comox Avenue’ in the subject heading.

Comments must be received by Feb. 17. They can be emailed to newbuild@cvviews.ca or mailed to 2137 Comox Ave., Comox, B.C. V9M 1P2.
