Complete fire ban issued for Terrace

The ban is expected to last at least a week, according to the city's fire department chief

The Terrace Fire Department has issued a complete fire ban within city limits.

The ban includes all types of fires, excluding propane barbecues, and will be in place for at least a week according to fire department chief John Klie.

“If we start getting the rains we’re supposed to get we’ll look at lifting the ban then, but we won’t make that decision until next Monday,” Klie said over the phone.

The fire department says the ban was implemented as the danger rating moved to “Extreme” in the Northwest Fire Centre area.

The only exemptions apply to the Ferry Island campground, where campfires are currently permitted. The fire department said they feel confident that with a groundskeeper doing patrols 24-hours a day, fires will be kept under a certain limit. But if anything gets out of hand, they’ll be able to respond.

“If you’re having a campfire down at Ferry Island doing it responsibly,” Klie said. “Everything is really tender dry right now, so just be vigilant.”

The ban will be revisited next week if cooler temperatures and rain move into the region. Last week the District of Kitimat and the Nisga’a Lisims Government issued similar burning bans until further notice.
