Cowichan Bay – Your recent guest columnist, Wally Smith, did a great job of putting lipstick on a pig (in this case a dairy cow) in defending supply management.
Without a powerful lobby in Ottawa, this tightly controlled marketing system would have been gone on day one of a Harper
majority. Hiding behind steep tariff walls goes completely against Conservative ideology.
At the heart of this skewed system is the monetary value of quota. Beef, pork and grain farmers do not enjoy this type of protection. I think it would be wise for any farmer in a supply-managed system to start thinking of a future without it.
