A scholarship in remembrance of West Shore RCMP Const. Sarah Beckett could be awarded for the first time this year.
The young mother of two was killed in Langford last spring when her police cruiser was struck by another vehicle.
The Capital Regional District’s traffic safety commission decided a memorial scholarship would be a way to honour Beckett, while also annually raising awareness of traffic safety issues and community service provided by the region’s police force.
The $2,000 scholarship would be awarded annually to a youth entering a career in law enforcement. Consideration will also be given to academic achievement, financial need and community service.
The scholarship took a big step towards fruition last week at the CRD’s board meeting, but a few details still need to be finalized before the traffic safety commission can officially accept applications.
