The work being done on the Golden Civic Centre is moving ahead with a weekend New Year celebration on the horizon. Inside, the building is taking on a whole new look.
“The drywall has been put up which helps define the spaces better. By the time we have another tour at the end of the month the walls will be in to give people a good sense of what the space will be like. It looks like it is going to be a comfortable space to be in,” said redevelopment chair Glen Ewan.
The decision was made to leave wall from the original basement uncovered so people will be able to see what the concrete floor was like. “You can see the layers of where people would gather on the weekend and lay four feet on a weekend and then leave it. Then they would come back a few days later and lay some more. There are actually different qualities of course.”
The mystery of the shoe prints in the basement floor is still one those involved with the project are trying to resolve.
“There is a little space in the basement in the original concrete floor that has four or five footprints from a seven or eight-year-old child. The child must have walked across the concrete after it had been poured. We are trying to figure out who that child was. This is a child who was probably born around 1940 and they may have gotten in trouble for walking through the concrete in the first place. We are dying to find out who it was,” Ewan said.
The group is also making appeals to people who have photos taken at the civic centre over the years for any reason.
The hope is they will be able to scan the original photos and make a display for people to see the history of what has happened in the building.
