A new mechanic shop is on track in Coldstream.
Council approved a $779,870 contract for Sawchuk Developments to build a mechanic facility at the public works yard off Aberdeen Road.
“It came in 20 per cent under what we had budgeted so that has given us a good contingency fund,” said Mayor Jim Garlick.
Sewer and water lines have been extended to the site and it’s expected construction will begin soon.
The borrowing of funds for the shop was approved during a referendum last fall.
Garlick says the building will protect major capital investments such as machinery.
“For the long-term view of the municipality, it is needed.”
Also on Tuesday, council approved the purchase of a single-axle cab and chassis with dump box and plow for $135,006.
Secondary suites scrutinized
The possibility of secondary rental suites in Coldstream will be part of a community debate.
Council has decided that the issue of suites in residential neighbourhoods will be part of an official community plan review.
“We will let the whole community determine if they desire this,” said Mayor Jim Garlick.
“Right now, though, it is business as usual and we’re enforcing the bylaw.”
Residents of the Sage Pointe and Bayview Heights subdivisions have recently expressed concerns about secondary suites.
