Controlled fire on Hudson Bay Mtn

Fire on the southeast portion of mountain is a controlled burn by Smithers Mountain Bike Association

A small forest fire on Hudson Bay Mountain was visible from Smithers Friday morning after 11 a.m.

This is the press release from BC Wildfire Service received at 2:08 p.m.:

Smoke from a pile burning project on Hudson Bay Mountain is highly visible in the Smithers area, but the BC Wildfire Service is fully aware of this project and it does not pose any risk to the town of Smithers.

The Smithers Mountain Bike Association obtained a Category 3 open burning permit for this project and is now burning slash piles associated with its trail clean-up program. The burn site is about two kilometres west of Smithers in the Bluff Trails area.

There are currently seven Category 3 open burning permits in effect within 10 kilometres of downtown Smithers. Smoke from these fires could be visible in the coming days, but none of these fires pose a threat to the community.
