A truck driver who stopped on the side of the highway to make a coffee run came back to find his rig had rolled away.

“This certainly could have been tragic,” said Saanich police Sgt. Dean Jantzen. “Luckily this thing went off the road, instead of out into traffic. It’s a testament of how not to park your truck.”

The semi truck had been improperly parked on the Pat Bay Highway, near the Royal Oak shopping centre Tim Hortons.

While driverless, the one-tonne commercial truck travelled roughly 100 metres in the southbound lane before ending up in a grass shoulder. The truck did not hit any other vehicles. Police responded to reports of the runaway truck and the driver, double-double in hand, was issued a $109 ticket for failing to park off the roadway.
