Heritage register
The city will create an inventory of significant heritage resources.
Since 2005, the city has had a community heritage register, which contains council-approved sites including Trethewey House, Clayburn school and church, the Sikh Temple and Old South Poplar School.
A inventory will list sites that have some historical significance and will help identify potential sites to add to the official community heritage register.
Private owners of potentially historically significant properties will be able to list voluntarily.
Council also approved the addition to the register the Great Northern Railway bridge site at Ellwood and Fishtrap Creek Park.
Storage project advances
A project to build a three-storey storage facility at Sumas Way and Third Avenue was given third reading at council on Monday.
Concerns had been raised by some neighbouring residents about the impact on traffic so near to the U.S. border.
Coun. Les Barkman said the site is “the gateway to our country” and said he wanted to know if “this was the best we could do” for the site.
The project was approved by council – only Coun. Les Barkman voted to deny the project – pending final approval.
Zoning bylaw adopted
A new, streamlined zoning bylaw was adopted by council on Monday.
The bylaw, which regulates land use in the city, replaces the old zoning bylaw which had not been significantly reviewed in about 18 years.
Phase two of the project is expected to begin this fall, and will include a review of agricultural zones, comprehensive development zones, adult entertainment use regulations and a review of potentially increasing secondary suite options in certain zones.
