District of Sooke council has paved the way for a $95,500 shoulder widening project on Grant Road.
This year the district will widen the shoulders for approximately half the length of Grant Road and then continue the project in the following years to widen the shoulders the rest of the way to connect Otter Point Road to Highway 14.
“Grant Road is a heavily used corridor for both pedestrians and motor vehicle traffic,” said Rob Howat, director of development services.
“The narrow pavement and steep gravel shoulders create severe accessibility issues for wheelchairs, walkers and electric scooters, all of which are common in the area.”
Howat said the roadwork will create a buffer zone to increase pedestrian safety without disrupting drainage patterns or driveway and parking accesses.
The Grant Road shoulder widening project is one of the major sidewalk improvement projects the district plans to undertake this year. Other work is set for intersection of Church and Throup roads, and the stretch of Highway 14 between Otter Point Road and the Hope Centre.
Work on Grant Road is expected to start soon.
