A local developer’s proposal to re-activate a gravel pit in Silver Creek and prepare it for a subdivision will go before council next week.
During a Sept. 28 council meeting, livestreamed on the District of Hope’s Facebook page, councillors will consider Emil Anderson Construction’s request for a temporary use permit for their 20060 Hockin Road property.
This is the second time the application goes before council after it faced opposition from neighbouring homeowners who feared noise, environmental and health effects from the active gravel pit would ruin their quality of life.
The district received 28 letters of opposition where neighbours spelled out their fears of dust and noise, as well as a potential drop in property values and overall quality of life. Many local residents are seniors, some letter writers noted, with pre-existing health conditions.
Michael Jacobs, chairman of the Emil Anderson board, promised the company would be a good neighbour and would take various actions to mitigate noise and dust from the pit.
Jacobs also promised to have the company hold community meetings to further outline the plans for the pit. One such meeting was held Sept. 3 and a second planned meeting was cancelled due to lack of attendees responding to an invite.
Emil Anderson Construction have put in a proposal to supply graven to the Trans Mountain Expansion Project, set to start construction around Hope later this year. In the longer term, the company has its sights on developing a subdivision on this land with 84 lots.
Anyone with an interest in the permit application can send comments to the district by email to jgill@hope.ca or dbellingham@hope.ca, in the district hall mail slot or by mail to District of Hope, 325 Wallace Street, PO Box 609, Hope, BC, V0X 1L0. Any submissions must be in by 4 p.m. Sept. 28.
Anyone who wishes to speak at the meeting must pre-register by calling planner Cindy Skoro at 604-869-5671 to be added to a speakers’ list.
