David Bennett, a resident of the District of Sooke since 1993, and a current councillor, formally announced his intention Sept. 13 to seek the position of mayor in the upcoming municipal elections on Saturday, Nov. 19 (with the pending retirement of Sooke’s second Mayor, Janet Evans).
“I am extremely honoured that the citizens of Sooke put their confidence in my abilities and my potential to contribute to the well-being of our community as a councillor in 2008. I hope that I may continue to serve our dynamic, wonderful community for the next three years as mayor.”
Councillor Bennett’s record as a prepared, insightful and community-focused member of council speaks of his dedication, concern and leadership. He is an active, energetic volunteer with a number of community organizations, and his enthusiastic participation in a variety of committees has enhanced his perspective of the greater community. In the last municipal election, Bennett topped the polls with nearly 75 per cent of the vote.
“I am asking the citizens of Sooke for another vote of confidence on Nov. 19, to be their mayor. We need to build on the successes and achievements of previous mayors and councils. We need to have reasonable and thoughtful decision making on council. We need to ensure our community continues to grow in a progressive, appropriate manner, with effective planning for a safe, caring, accessible place to work, live and play, for a prosperous and sustainable future. Together we can accomplish all of this, and more.” said Bennett.
