Court case moves ahead

The case of a former Vernon RCMP officer charged in a child pornography investigation will be heard this summer

The case of a former Vernon RCMP officer charged in a child pornography investigation will be heard this summer.

But not in Vernon.

The matter against Ryan David Hampton will be heard in Kelowna.

Hampton, who was 34 when he was arrested in May 2013, is charged with one count each of possession of child pornography, accessing child pornography and attempting to obstruct justice, as well as six counts of breach of an undertaking.

Hampton’s trial is slated to be heard by judge alone for two weeks starting July 13.

Crown counsel Claire Ducluzeau said Hampton’s trial is being moved to Kelowna for the purpose of efficiency, stating they can get the trial done in 10 days in Kelowna as opposed to available dates in Vernon.

Hampton’s lawyer, David Tarnow of Richmond, did not return a call for comment.

Hampton resigned from the RCMP in 2014.
