Following the government’s long awaited announcement to establish a committee on electoral reform, local MP Gord Johns (Courtenay-Alberni) went door-to-door on Saturday to hear directly from his constituents.
“If we want Canadians to be truly reflected in our electoral system, we have to go out and speak with them directly,” said Johns.
Johns and several volunteers canvassed a neighbourhood in Courtenay and spoke with residents about the NDP’s proposal to ensure that the new electoral system fairly distributes seats in the House of Commons based on how Canadians actually voted.
“There’s a ton of support across party lines for a proportional electoral system,” said Johns, “But I’m listening to everyone, that’s my job. We need to get this right.”
The Liberals were criticized last week for stacking the electoral reform committee with a majority of Liberal MPs as well as failing to engage in effective outreach to Canadians, according to a news release from Johns’ office.
In the coming months, the news release said Johns will be holding town hall meetings on electoral reform as well as continuing to go door-knocking in communities across his riding of Courtenay-Alberni.
