Hundreds of people took to the streets in Courtenay Friday, Sept. 27, for round two of a global strike.

Round one took place May 3 when 300-plus students gathered outside Courtenay City Hall, and marched to the shared NDP office of Courtenay-Comox MLA Ronna-Rae Leonard and Courtenay-Alberni MP Gord Johns.

Friday’s march started at Simms Park, wound its way to the Comox Valley School District office, and continued downtown past the courthouse.

More than 150 countries were participating in the demonstrations as part of a global movement aimed at pressuring governments to act on combatting climate change.

From marches to “die-ins,” where protesters lie down to simulate being dead, participants helped raise awareness about Swedish activist Greta Thunberg’s movement.

Friday was the last day of Global Climate Strike Week, which coincided with Thunberg’s trip to the UN Climate Action Summit in New York City.
