Plans to build a new fire hall for the Dashwood Volunteer Fire Department have been put on hold and will be reassessed in September.
Detailed drawing plans of the project, endorsed by the community through an Alternative Approval Process in September of 2019, were set to be created by Praxis, the firm hired to do the job.
A cost estimate was submitted for the design that included fire hall layout, engineered plans for the electrical, mechanical, structural and civil that would meet today’s building codes and also the Regional District of Nanaimo’s Green Building Policy B1-16.
The Dashwood Fire Department Society and the fire chief Nick Acciavatti supported the proposal presented by Praxis but due to the economic impact of COVID-19, it was recommended that construction of the project be shelved for now until an appropriate time alleviate the tax increase associated with the project.
The Electoral Areas Services Committee, at its meeting on May 12, voted in favour of placing the project on hold and re-evaluate in September.
