A COVID-19 outbreak at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital has ended, says Island Health.
The health authority announced Nov. 11 that five staff members tested positive for COVID-19, with evidence of transmission between staff at the transitions unit. Island Health subsequently said it tested 59 people, with all testing negative, and in a press release dated today, Nov. 21, it declared the outbreak over.
“With the implementation of comprehensive strategies to prevent and respond to COVID-19 in acute sites, there are no longer any COVID-19 cases related to this outbreak at the site,” Island Health said in the press release.
“Upon declaring the outbreak, Island Health immediately implemented precautions, including enhanced cleaning, as well as contact tracing to protect the health of all staff, medical staff, students, and patients. The transitions unit at NRGH is now open to new admissions and transfers, the press release said.
According to the B.C. Ministry of Health, there are currently 446 total cases of COVID-19 in the Island Health region, with six confirmed deaths.
