COVID-19 safety protocols in place at Summerland’s municipal buildings

Doors remain open, but masks, physical distancing and other measures have been put in place

As the number of COVID-19 cases continues to rise in the province and in the area under Interior Health, the municipality of Summerland is continuing to follow protocols to slow the spread of the pandemic.

Karen Needham, acting administrator for Summerland, said the municipal hall building on Henry Avenue remains open, but provincial protocols are in place.

These include mandatory mask wearing and a two-meter physical distancing requirement.

In addition, some members of municipal staff are continuing to work from home during the pandemic, Needham said.

At essential services buildings including the fire department, the water treatment facility, the wastewater treatment facility and the electrical department, strict COVID-19 protocols are being observed.

“The district continues to take their direction from the public health office,” Needham said.

The Summerland Arena and Summerland Aquatic Centre are still open to the public, although COVID-19 safety protocols have been put in place.

Lori Mullin, Summerland’s director of community services, said provincial regulations are affecting use of the municipality’s recreational facilities.

The arena is open for team practices and games, but spectators are not allowed.

The aquatic centre is open, but there are limits to how many people are permitted. Masks must be worn up to the water’s edge, but are not required in the pool.

In addition, fitness classes in the water have been cancelled.

The fitness room at the aquatic centre is open, but those using this facility are required to register in advance. Drop-ins are not permitted.

Group fitness sessions have been cancelled.
