The leisure pool at the Cowichan Aquatic Centre will reopen on April 6, allowing for increased capacity in current programs, including length swimming, water fitness classes, family POD sessions, and access to the lazy river.

Programming will continue to expand in the coming months, in accordance with Public Health Orders, to include swimming lessons, camps, career training programs, rehabilitation services, and more, according to a press release from the Municipality of North Cowichan.

The CAC closed one year ago in March, 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the closure, a major retrofit and expansion project of the CAC was completed.

Last October, the competition pool [a 25-metre lap pool] and fitness area reopened, beginning CAC’s phased and gradual resumption of services under a COVID-19 safety plan.

“The leisure pool fulfills an important recreational and health need for many in our community, and I am so pleased to announce its reopening,” says Mayor Al Siebring.

“Our recreational facilities have been greatly affected by the pandemic, and our team continues to adjust their COVID-19 safety plans to meet emergent and changing Provincial Health Orders. New safety equipment and protocols, increased sanitation of surfaces, and decreased capacity are all part of the safety-first plan.”

Residents can pre-register for programs taking place in the leisure pool beginning on March 23.

Program and class details can be found at www.northcowichan.ca/recreation, and registration is available at www.RecCowichan.ca, or by calling 250-746-7665.
