Cowichan Valley kindergarten registration begins Jan. 18

Lottery system may be used for in-demand French and nature schools

As the current school year nears the halfway point, officials at School District 79 are already thinking about the next one. Kindergarten registration for the September, 2021 school year begins on Jan. 18 for the district’s French immersion schools and for Mill Bay Nature School. It ends on Jan. 22.

Registration continues on Jan. 25 for the remainder of the district’s schools, and runs until Jan. 29. Parents registering their children at the schools must do so during regular office hours.

Parents hoping to avoid a visit to the schools can go to the SD79 website to register their child online, or to download the registration documents, though parents should note there may be other forms to fill out at the schools.

Any child five years old on or before Dec. 31, 2021 is eligible to begin Kindergarten in the fall. A Canadian birth certificate or Canadian passport and proof of residency (like a BC Services card) is required.

Which school to register for depends on the catchment area where the student resides. There’s a school locator tool on the SD79 website to help those who are unsure.

If demand for French immersion and/or the nature school program is higher than the available spaces, a lottery system will be used. Details can be found on the District’s website.
