The Central Kootenay Invasive Species Society (CKISS) led about a dozen volunteers from the Opt (Options for Sexual Health) Clinic as they dug knapweed from the sides of West Creston Road near the Wildlife Interpretation Centre on Monday evening.
The invasive plant interferes with the nesting sites of western painted turtles.
“They’ve got a really long taproot,” said Michael Lee of Vast Resource Solutions, “and it will go right through eggs, and even entrap hatchlings.”
For the volunteers’ efforts, the Opt clinic received a $250 donation from the CKIPC.
