Firefighters from Beaver Creek, Cherry Creek and Sproat Lake volunteer fire departments responded to a field fire on Cameron Road in Beaver Creek on Monday afternoon.
The field is estimated to be as large as 20 acres and approximately one quarter of the field was burning, said Beaver Creek Fire Chief Charlie Starratt. Firefighters set up portable water units to help fight the blaze, and ferried in water from the nearest hydrants.
The cause of the fire had not been determined as of Monday evening, according to Starratt.
Firefighters attacked the fire from two different directions, on Beaver Creek Road and Cameron Road, attempting to protect the buildings on either side of the field. Fire crews also put a call in to the Coastal Fire Centre for aerial support, and a four-person crew from the Thunderbirds responded.
“It is early in the year for that,” Starratt acknowledged.
